Yin Yoga - And what are the benefits?
Discover the Power of Yin Yoga
In a world that constantly encourages movement, productivity, and busy schedules, Yin Yoga invites us to do something very different — to slow down, be still, and simply breathe. This gentle yet deeply powerful practice offers space to reconnect with both body and mind, helping us find balance in the middle of modern life.
Whether you are looking to improve flexibility, reduce stress, or create a deeper sense of calm, Yin Yoga provides a nurturing practice that supports overall wellbeing.
A Brief History of Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is a modern style of yoga inspired by ancient traditions. Its foundations come from both Indian yoga philosophy and Chinese Taoist practices, particularly the concept of balancing Yin and Yang energies within the body.
The practice was developed and popularised in the late 20th century by teachers including Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. They combined long-held floor-based postures with principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, mindfulness, and meditation.
In Taoist philosophy, “Yin” represents qualities such as stillness, softness, patience, and introspection, while “Yang” represents movement, energy, and activity. Many modern lifestyles are heavily Yang-focused, leaving us overstimulated, physically tight, and mentally exhausted. Yin Yoga helps restore balance by encouraging quietness, surrender, and deep release.
What Makes Yin Yoga Different?
Unlike dynamic yoga styles that focus on muscular strength and flowing movement, Yin Yoga is slow, passive, and meditative. Most postures are practiced seated or lying down and are held for several minutes at a time, usually between 3 and 5 minutes, sometimes longer.
Holding poses for extended periods allows the body to gently access deeper connective tissues such as fascia, ligaments, hips, pelvis, and joints. Rather than forcing flexibility, Yin Yoga teaches us to soften, breathe, and allow the body to gradually open in its own time.
Classes often include the use of props such as bolsters, blankets, straps, and blocks to create comfort and support. This makes Yin Yoga suitable for beginners as well as experienced practitioners.
But Yin Yoga is not only a physical practice — it is also a practice of mindfulness. As the body becomes still, the mind is invited to slow down too. Many people find Yin Yoga deeply calming and emotionally grounding, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from external distractions and reconnect inwardly.

A Practice of Slowing Down
One of the greatest gifts of Yin Yoga is the permission it gives us to pause. In the stillness of each posture, we learn to observe rather than react, to breathe through discomfort, and to create space within ourselves.
Yin Yoga reminds us that healing and transformation do not always come through effort and intensity. Sometimes they come through softness, stillness, and simply allowing ourselves to rest.
